How to use Google classroom effectively for both teachers and students?

This tutorial describes on “how to use Google classroom more effectively.” The tutorial contains the image screenshots and step by step process. Also includes a video guide.

Online classes are popular as the lock down is increasing. There are many school and colleges using the online class module. In fact, it is necessary and will help in the future as well. Few of the schools and colleges developing their own system to deliver the online class, interact with the students and track the assignments. But many are using Facebook messenger or WhatsApp to communicate and dealing with the assignment.  However, to deliver the online class, they are using ZOOM. There are couple of other ways to held the online class including Google Meet, Microsoft Team and Skype as well.

I am not telling about the class delivery mechanism. I think ZOOM is the good choice. Instead, I would like to clarify the securities issues with it and I prefer ok to use it. You can securely use ZOOM free version without any concern. No idea if there are issues for big companies but as far as the SMEs concern it is ok to use the software for the online class. As a blogger I use it multiple times to conduct the webinars. So, Keep using ZOOM that’s more than ok. But dealing the assignments through messenger or WhatsApp may get the better option. There comes the Google Classroom.

What is Google classroom?

Google classroom is the online learning management system. Though it is not the complete LMS (Learning Management System) like SAP Litmos. It is the free and handy tool to deal with students and their assignments. This is handy for both teachers and students. Teachers can create as many classes as they like and get their students join the class. Students can join as many classes as they need. If I can summarize it, I would say it a perfect tool to handle the assignment between teachers and students properly. You can use it with your Gmail account.

What can you do with it?

I am not going to briefly describing the each and every task here. However, you will get the complete idea as what you can do with Google classroom from below points.

  • Store class materials: You can store different class materials like rules and regulations, tutorials, eBooks etc. online on. You can also share image, PDF, your recorded video, YouTube Videos, Playlists. And every student can access it anywhere, anytime.
  • Create assignments: As a teacher you can create assignments to your students. Assignments can be in different forms like multiple choice questions, image, and text.
  • Submit assignments: As a student you can submit your assignment.
  • Grade assignments: As a teacher you can grade each student’s assignment.
  • Make an announcement: If you have to share anything with your students you can make that via announcement.
  • Check each student progress and email it to parents.
  • You can also share the recorded ZOOM lessons so that students can watch it anytime on their timeline

Google classroom login.

You can login into the Google classroom with the help of Google account (Gmail account). You probably have the Google account I guess. Even if you do not have, you can create it in the simple steps. Google classroom mobile app is also available on Google Play Store as well.

How to use Google classroom as a teacher?

Teacher is the primary source in the Google classroom. Teacher creates the classes and invite students to join there. You can simply join with Gmail account. However, your education institute may also need to sign in for G-suite account. This is also free for education institutes. You need to Google classroom login to start with.

  • Click to login
  • You will be prompted to the login screen where you need to input your username and then password. Take a look at the below screen.

  • Follow these steps 1. login screen 2. enter your email or phone 3. click on next.
  • Now you will be prompted to enter the password.

  • Step 4. Type in you Google password and then 5. click on next. You enter into Google classroom screen

This is the Google classroom screen where you can manage classes, check assignments, share materials such as text, image and videos as a teacher. While as a students you can check the materials shared by teacher, submit your assignment etc. I am trying to detail on each of it separately below.

Create a class.

Once you are into the Google classroom you can either create classes or join the classes into it. So, as a teacher you now need to create a class. Look at the top right corner, you will see + sign.

  • Step 1. Click on that + sign. And then 2. Create class.
  • You will have to agree with terms of service as in the below screen.

  • Step 3. Click “I’ve read and understand…..” check box to agree the terms of services. Then “Continue” button will be enabled. 4. Click on continue.

Now you will have to enter the class details that you are going to create. Take a look at the below screen.

Fill in all the details. Once you enter the class name “create” button will be activated. You can enter “Section, Subject, Room” or you can also leave it blank. But you must enter the class name.

Now your class has been created. And you will see the class screen as follows. Please remember the class code right below the class name as seen inside circle in the below screen. You will need it to give your students so that they can join your class.

Once you create the classroom, you can invite your students by providing the class code as seen inside the circle in the image above. With the help of Google classroom you can interact with your students in a various manner.

How to use Google classroom as students?

You also need to login to start with. When you are joining as a student you need a class code which will be provided by your teacher and looks like 355l76r. The login process is similar to the teacher.

  • Click here to login
  • You will be prompted to the login screen where you need to input your username and then password. Take a look at the below screen.

  • Follow these steps 1. login screen 2. enter your email or phone 3. click on next. Now you will be prompted to enter the password.

Join the class.

This is the Google classroom screen. Login process for both teachers and the students is similar up to here. Now as a student you will have to join the class.

  • Click on the 1.+” sign at the top right corner. 2. click on the join class. You will be prompted to enter the class code provided by your teacher.

  • Please remember you must have the class code to join the class. Class code is given to you by your teacher. Once you have the class code. 1. Enter the class code here 2. click on join.

Now you have joined the classroom. There might be all other your classmates as well. You can get the materials, class assignments, leave the messages to your teachers.

Quick tips for online class.

Teacher student relationship is always the kind of connection in between. This is clearly maintained during the physical classroom. But when you are there with the online class it is kind of virtual. However, you can connect by making the continues communication during online class. If I have to summarize I would in a following points.

  • Take the online class using Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Team, Skype or any other tools.
  • Communicate enough while showing the presentation. If possible talk to each students. It is possible in a small class size.
  • If direct communication is not possible then talk to each students frequently.
  • Provide the assignment through Google classroom and inform students during online class. You can schedule your assignment.
  • Record your class and share it on Google classroom.
  • Grade students for their completed assignments and ask to improve for those who are on lower grade.
